Equality in Education for Disabled Girls: Bridging the Last Mile

Empowering disabled girls through equal education opportunities—bridging the last mile to inclusion, dignity, and brighter futures.

Equality in Education for Disabled Girls: Bridging the Last Mile

Despite advancements, many girls, especially the physically challenged girls, face multiple obstacles in pursuing education. They are deprived of the educational facilities that they must have. The absence of equality in education makes them unable to achieve the basic right. Various international communities and non-profit organizations such as Cry have stepped forward to support the underprivileged disabled girls by providing them the education.

Rights of Girls with Disabilities in Education

Several girls with disabilities in the world face challenges in receiving primary to high school education. The transition rate to higher studies is also much lower for girls with disabilities compared to others. The lack of education affects the workforce worldwide, where only a negligible number of physically challenged girls are employed. Equality in education is achievable by ensuring the rights of girls with disabilities through the following initiatives.

  • Every girl child with a disability has the right to have free education till a certain age limit.
  • Restructuring of the education system for disabled girl children is mandatory to make it easier for them.
  • The free books, scholarships, and learning materials should be provided to encourage them to avail the basic right to education.
  • There must be a grievance redressal system to aid the girl child with disability.
  • They must have the freedom to express their opinion and get access to all information.

Commitment to Equality in Education of Disabled Girls

As socially responsible individuals, we commit to protecting and respecting the rights of disabled girl children. The encouragement of the family and parents of physically challenged girls is mandatory so that they do not think of depriving their children of basic education. The availability of safe and accessible transport for disabled girls is crucial for protecting their rights.

Barriers in Education for Disabled Girls

The girl with a disability often faces violations of rights due to social disparity and a lack of acceptance.

  1. Barriers to school attendance: Most of the schools are located in urban areas, and they are not easily accessible to children. Moreover, the transportation facilities are very expensive, and there are limited resources to support disabled girl children to attend school.
  2. Stop violence and bullying against disabled girls: Girls with disabilities often come across bullying and teasing that negatively impact their minds. They feel the difficulty in free thinking.
  3. Deal with financial barriers: There is an old-school thought that a male child will give financial support to the family in the future. So, parents most of the time feel reluctant to admit their children into school.
  4. Psychological barriers to learning: Many teachers and staff are unwilling to provide extra facilities to disabled girl children and an extra facility and learning environment due to a lack of training and education.

Support for girl children with disabilities is crucial for maintaining equality in education. Through strategic decision-making, campaigns, awareness among the schools, and the empowerment of girl children, the empowerment of girl children is possible. With the collaborative approach and developing an open mind, the disparity can be eliminated.
